Thoughts on the WPS and the Stadium Experience

It is interesting how things change over time. Not that long ago - I had no interest in soccer at all. I didn't play it in my youth. I did know there were professional soccer leagues in the world, but that was about it. Now I'm an avid Pride supporter and also the chairman of AVFC California (a branch of Aston Villa FC's network of official supporter clubs).

Regarding the Pride, I have been happily surprised with the games I have been to this season. I must have been jaded from hanging out with male soccer fans that would have nothing to do with the WPS. I've found the family atmosphere refreshing and the standard of play excellent. I had been a San Jose Earthquakes season ticket holder. The atmosphere at Buck Shaw Stadium was good for families, but there are savory elements that are best not being in earshot of families with children or youth soccer teams.

WPS presents the "beautiful game" wonderfully.

Take a look at this article that came from "The Equalizer" (http://equalizersoccer.com/webpages/blog.aspx?postid=919d543d-1bfc-444e-aa01-458ee36b4e01)

I agree - that increased supporter group / "serious" fan numbers would elevate the experience at WPS games, but there is a very delicate balance that must be maintained. There are some supporter groups that are "over the top". Between the excess comsumption of alcohol and some of the filthiest mouths in sports - great supporter group enthusiasm can turn ugly and actually degrade from the experience (especially for families). Don't get me wrong - having a ice cold beer at a sporting event is wonderful. It's when it is no longer a refreshing beverage and becomes a recreational drug that I'm talking about.

Lets Go Pride!
